Bait Al Gahwa is a concept based on extensive research in order to document and safeguard an essential element of Emirati culture in Abu Dhabi.
The practice of serving Gahwa communally has been a part of the Emirati tradition of hospitality and generosity for centuries, passed down from generation to generation in Abu Dhabi. Not only is it a part of celebrations, it is a symbol of unity that preserves social, political and cultural associations that have helped shape Emirati society into what it is today.
Sane’ Al Gahwa (maker) leads the intricate process of preparing the perfect finjan (cup) of Gahwa. He or she will take you through the journey of making coffee with a performance that demonstrates all of the vital and detailed acts and rituals that must take place, from roasting to finally serving Gahwa. The Modheef's (host) role is to interpret the experience to you by explaining the different acts of the Gahwa maker and will answer any questions you have.
The process begins with the roasting of the coffee beans using Al Tawa and Al Mihmas, and then the beans are cooled and ground using Al Rashad and Al Manhaz (Traditional instruments used to make Arabic coffee). After that, the coffee grounds are placed in a dallah (Arabic coffee pot), and heated to boil on Al Qawar using Al Minfakh. Finally, the coffee is poured into Al Mazlah (a smaller dallah) and served in a Finyal (cup).
